On Saturday May 11, 2019 the SPCA Windhoek held its first Shelter Open Day. An estimated 150 visitors came to join one of the shelter tours; play with puppies and kitties; give treats to the dogs; get their faces painted; draw animals; or to simply enjoy a cup of coffee and a snack.
During the tours, our staff and volunteers spoke about the organization’s different programs, which include an animal shelter for lost and abandoned animals, adoption center, volunteer program, animal education program, and an animal inspector department. We also spoke about the nearly 3,700 animals that were rescued in fiscal year 2018 and the challenges that brings when there are an average of 260 animals at the SPCA at any one time.
We organized this event as a way to connect with members of the public and give an opportunity for those curious about animals but not necessarily ready or wanting to adopt or volunteer to see what the SPCA is all about.
