Help Needed Now: Our Staff Are Caring for More Animals Than Ever

As we move through 2026, SPCA Windhoek faces an unprecedented challenge. Between January 1 and April 20, 1,435 animals joined our care. That’s an average of 14 new animals every day, about 388 each month. Behind every number is a living being in need of food, medical attention, and a safe place to call home.
Our team on the ground is small but mighty: 17 full-time staff members dedicated to these animals. Yet the workload has surged beyond what any shelter should bear. The daily reality adds up quickly, weaving a rhythm that shapes every shift and every decision.
In a typical month, care duties unfold in a demanding pattern. There are always existing animals to feed, medicines to administer, and new arrivals that require a fresh start. On average, about 19.4 existing animals need daily attention, while 14.2 new animals arrive each day. Put together, that’s a total care load of roughly 33.6 animals to look after every day. It’s more than a statistic; it’s a lives-at-stake tempo that leaves little room for pause.
The burden isn’t only in numbers. It’s in the quiet hours when the shelter hums with feed bowls clinking, the clatter of cleaning supplies, and the desperate sounds of dogs and cats awaiting care. The team works with unwavering resolve, but long hours, emotional strain, and stretched resources take their toll. Delays can mean longer waits for intake assessments, medical exams, or a chance at a loving home. The emotional weight of witnessing so many animals in need—day after day—adds another layer of fatigue to an already packed schedule.
To shine a light on the human side of this story, meet Helena, one of our dedicated animal caretakers. Her day begins not with a headline, but with careful check-ins. She first checks on all her animals, updates records, and flags any urgent medical or behavioural needs. Then she moves to feeding, preparing balanced meals that meet each animal’s dietary requirements, while ensuring medications and supplements are given on schedule. Cleaning follows—kennels and enclosures are tended to with care, disinfected, and organised to maintain a safe, hygienic environment. Social time is essential, too. Helena spends some moments with her dogs and puppies, providing enrichment activities and observing behaviour to gauge comfort and welfare. After these rounds, she repeats checks, monitoring for distress or illness and coordinating with our veterinary team for any concerns. This rhythm continues throughout the day.
What this all means for our animals and our staff is clear. The workload is intense, and even small disruptions ripple through the day. Helena’s routine is designed to maximise every moment of positive interaction while keeping animals healthy and secure. The emotional weight is very real: daily exposure to animals in need, paired with the fast pace of care, underscores why community support is crucial to sustaining these efforts.
How you can help right now is simple, but powerful. Adopt or sponsor a pet to create space and give a deserving animal a home. A urgent donation can fund food, medicines, and shelter operations. Please share this message to amplify our plea and reach more potential adopters and supporters. If you’re local, consider visiting our shelter or exploring our website to learn about current needs and available pets. In-kind donations—food, bedding, towels, blankets, enrichment toys—are deeply appreciated and directly ease daily operations.
Every day counts. With 1,435 new arrivals already this year, our capacity to provide timely medical care, nutrition, and safe housing is stretched to the limit. By choosing to adopt, sponsor, donate, or share, you help reduce the burden on our staff and speed the journey of animals into loving homes.
Thank you for standing with SPCA Windhoek. Your immediate, compassionate action today can save lives tomorrow. We are in a critical situation and need the community’s support now.
