Why does the SPCA sterilise /neuter all the animals in its care?
We advocate sterilising/neutering ourselves and so we practice what we preach. We spay/neuter
every animal that we rehome, because we do not want to contribute to the numbers of unwanted
animals in the future. Early spays and neuters have been proven to be just as safe as the ones performed
on older animals .
I’ve heard that the SPCA kills animals?
We do not kill animals. Animals are put to sleep by means of an overdose of barbiturates administered by
vets only. We have a euthanasia policy which is accessible to the public at all times.
Approximately 1200 dogs
and 600 cats are brought to us each year . We have 50 kennels for dogs and 6 communal catteries. Our
statistics show that of all the animals brought to the shelter, about one third of the animals are found by
its rightful owner and one third can be rehomed. Some are so sick, injured or abused that we have to
euthanase them immediately.
We make every effort to rehome a pet before we euthanase it because we know that our shelter can
never substitute for a home for a pet. We believe in quality of life for the animals in our care.
Is there a rehoming policy?
The SPCA has a transparent adoption policy available to any member of the public. We do not sell dogs in our
care to security companies or allow them to be used as watchdogs. None of our dogs may be tied up
permanently.
We will rather euthanase an animal than rehome it to someone who does not meet our criteria for adoption.
Would you like to become an SPCA volunteer?
Do you enjoy working with animals? Do you enjoy working with others to make a difference in animals’ lives?
Then come and volunteer for us at the SPCA!
Our volunteers develop new skills while exploring the field of animal care and meeting people with similar
interests. Volunteering definitely makes life brighter for the animals in our care, and adds quality to your
life too.
You will learn to-
* exercise, socialize and feed the animals.
*brush and bathe pets available for adoption as needed. This really enhances any pets chances of being
adopted !
*Assist staff in our animals receiving area where pet owners relinquish their animals into our care or hand over
strays picked up into our care
